“It seems from all I’m seeing, your major focus is on writing and marketing books. What’s gotten you so excited about this right now?” Brian Basilico, host It’s Not About You, It’s About Bacon Podcast show, asked me during a recent interview.

“Now more than ever, we’re at a really critical time in our world and words have the power to change lives. I’m committed to helping as many authors get their message out in a big way,” I responded.

This was the kickoff to a lively conversation between Brian and myself.

The main point I wanted to get across during the interview is this; regardless of whether you write books, blog posts, articles or post your thoughts on social media sites, words have power.

It's a Critical Time

Right now, more than ever, authors need to step up to the plate and be willing to transform readers with your words.

As an author, are you willing to write your truth? Are you willing to take a position that CAN change lives? Are you willing to quit hiding out?

In my interview with Brian, I shared why writing is so important to me and the clients I work with.  If I can help a transformational writer get their message out to market, I’ve done my job.

In order to have this ability, it is essential for me to get out of the shadows. I must write about what is important to me. I must also be willing to not let other people’s judgment of me stop me in any way, shape or form.

Case in point

With all that is occurring around the Charlottesville, Va., there are those of us not willing to stand by in silence. The following is a post I recently posted on Facebook.

The great majority of people know right from wrong.

They know that there are evil and dangerous people. Many are speaking out against this evil, while others sit by quietly, not wanting to rock the boat. The boat must be rocked!

Here's the deal….

President Trump on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 sought to sanitize the stench of hate surrounding a deadly white nationalist rally in Virginia, calling armed, torch-carrying protesters clad in Nazi gear “very fine people” looking to protect their history.

Let's be very, very clear. Any Nazi is NOT a very fine person. Not at all. They are evil, dangerous and are not welcome anywhere. They are teaching their children hatred and attempting to infect the world with their poisonous BS.

Growing up, my mother shared stories of what it was like to live in a country occupied by the Nazis during WWII. As a young teen, she grew up knowing the evils, first hand, of what it was like to wonder if her home would be bombed, her friends taken to the camps (yes, there were many of her Jewish schoolmates who, from one day to the next, she witnessed disappearing), her own family under the threat of going to the camps and her uncle being beheaded by the Nazis for working the underground resistance. Every day my great uncle would do what he knew was right at the risk of losing his life, until one day he did.

Many people are speaking out as we watch the horrors unfold in the United States and around the world. Yet, many are passing judgement when they do not see others stepping up… or so they think.

In reality, we do not see all that our friends are doing. If you don't see that people are standing up for what is right and just, do not assume they are not.

My dear friend, Audrey Joseph is involved in San Francisco with organizing a march. In her own words “HEADS UP!!!! You have spoken and I agree the counter demonstration should happen in Civic Center at the same time on Aug 26th. More later but please be prepares to have your voices heard – to speak out against bigotry and hate.”

If you're not on Audrey's thread you have no idea what she's doing. And yet, Audrey is the kind of woman who rocks the boat, speaks up, organizes and does so with so much passion, power and persistence. She will not be silenced. She will not let hate prevail.

Do not assume because you haven't seen what folks are up to in the wake of hatred escalating that they are not doing something. Do not judge what you cannot see. There are many people at work on a grassroots level doing a lot.

Rather than judge others level of involvement, we must all ask ourselves, “Are we keeping silent out of fear of being judged and politically correct?” Screw political correctness. Our voices must be heard.

Are we offering up solutions or are we waiting for others to create the solution?

There is absolutely no time to stand by and hope this will go away. Each, in our own way, must be willing to stand up and be heard.

Truth be told, each, in our own way, can do. Each, in our own way, must do something.

Words have power. Words influence others. Words make a difference.

Are your words being heard, seen and read? If not, why not. Don’t wait for permission. Step up and be counted.

Podcasting is a GREAT way to gain visibility

You’ve got the book. You’ve got the speech. You’ve got the expertise, but very few people know you exist. It takes more than simply having the “thing” to be successful. You also need the visibility.

Years ago there wasn’t much competition online. Seems like whatever an expert introduced to market was a novelty and people ate it up. It was also much easier to stand out because of the fact there were very few people vying for people’s attention.

Today, this is definitely not the case. Today, your message is likely, unless you position it correctly, to be one among many, literally getting lost in the shuffle.

You have to also find ways to be viewed as more than a commodity. One way is to let your personality shine through. A great way to move from commodity to exclusivity is to get visibility and as much as you can, for you, your message and your point of view. Why? Simple. The more visible you are, the more you are unique to the “middle of the road” experts, the more people will turn to you for solutions they seek.

You have numerous options to position your point of view and perspective.

GOOGLE HANGOUTS

Hangouts are fast becoming a favorite of many experts, who not only want to build solid connection with their community, but also to get great SEO.

Hangouts have a very low startup cost and yet, a very high perceived value when done right. A few things to keep in mind when either hosting or participating in a Hangout is what viewers see in the background.

Whatever is within view needs to be consistent with your branding. In other words, no unmade beds in view.

TELESEMINARS

An all-time favorite, teleseminars are once again on the rise in popularity as a great way to reach a market with a strong message. There are plenty of free services for anyone on a limited budget.

YOUTUBE VIDEOS

Although some videos get no traction at all, many have been known to get hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands and even millions of views. With over four billion views per day, it’s no wonder smart entrepreneurs are using YouTube as a huge part of their promotions strategy.

To get lots of traction, add short videos on a fairly regular basis to your subscribers. After all, if they subscribed obviously they want to see more of your videos.

MEDIA RELEASES

There’s no shortage of people saying that media releases are a thing of the past. This is absolutely not true. There is plenty of call for well-structured media releases.

An eye-catching media release can get the attention of writers, publishers, journalists and freelancers for trade journals, magazines, blogs, podcasts, and other publications that cover your industry. Don’t underestimate the power of a well thought-out media release.

BLOGGING

The best part of blogging is that you have complete control over what you write about. There are virtually no barriers to entry on stating your perspective and point of view. You can be as low-key or as controversial as you want.

GUEST BLOGGING

For anyone seeking lots of exposure to a specific market, guest blogging is a great choice. Guest blogging also increases your credibility. After all, when you are a featured expert on someone else’s blog, you are considered an expert right out of the gate.

ARTICLES

Going the same route as media releases, there are plenty of people who claim article marketing is dead. Article marketing is alive and well.

Actually, writing and distributing lots of articles is one of the best ways to gain visibility, position your expertise and reach more of your market.

JOINT VENTURE PARTNERSHIPS

When you partner with other experts on their campaigns, or yours, you are again positioning your expertise in a very effective way.

Imagine what kind of traction you can get by partnering with anywhere from six to twelve experts promoting one another. It’s a powerful way to jumpstart your visibility.

SPEAKING

Although not an online strategy, speaking at industry conferences is a highly valuable way to stand out. Not only are you an assumed expert, there likely will be online promotions by the conference coordinators, thus giving you even more visibility and credibility.

SUMMARY

Visibility is absolutely essential for any expert who wants to be viewed as more than a commodity. To achieve the greatest result for your efforts, have a well thought-out plan, commit to consistency, and be willing, in a big way, to be completely who you are.

The more you are authentic and transparent, the more you will build a following of raving fans.

You can’t rest on your past successes

In the years I’ve been marketing and selling online, I’ve consistently watched people struggle in their attempt to get visibility for any number of eBased products they hope to move. Whether it be gaining visibility by way of a giveaway for the purpose of building a list or selling an eBook, teleseminar, webinar or home study program to additionally generate revenues, most fall short of their desired outcome.

There’s a very simple reason for this: left to our own devices, it’s incredibly difficult to get the traction we need to make a dent in our efforts.

In addition, many people are relying on outdated methods to build their presence, lists and revenues. In the past it was a heck of a lot easier to get people to pay attention to what we were offering and subsequently to opt in for our offer. Engagement was higher, as were open rates when follow-up emails were sent out.

Today, people are on information overload. They are more distracted than ever and there is a lot of “noise” they deal with day in and day out.

More than ever you absolutely must have a multi-pronged approach to your marketing and promotions. One prong I love is aligned partnerships.

Recently, I launched Power Up for Profits Podcast. It’s listed on iTunes and Stitcher, as well as on a website dedicated to my show—www.PowerUpForProfitsPodcast.com.

The announcement of my show's launch was very well planned. I didn’t one day think, “Hmmm, I think I’ll start a podcast show,” and immediately put something up on iTunes.

Nope. I assigned two team members the task of getting the website done and securing interview commitments from experts I know my market has an interest in.

We actually worked behind the scenes with the show for nearly two months before announcing it. The results?

Within a week we had over 1,000 downloads and by day one of the second week we hit 35% of the previous week's downloads. This simply means we have momentum building. With the numbers of listeners and downloads rising by the day we hit 10,000 downloads within a couple of months.

But! I am not resting on my laurels. Nope. We are continuing to promote the show and our featured experts, as well as running a contest to drive listeners to iTunes, and we announce each new show that rolls out.

As a result, my show has hit #3 in Careers category and #7 in Education in the first week. That's out of hundreds of thousands of shows on iTunes.

Here’s the rub, though…If I stopped doing everything I did in the first week to get the position we have, there’s a great chance the show would quickly be forgotten and all our efforts would be for naught.

On the back end, the benefits of having a podcast are many, but again, not without a very targeted effort on the part of me and my team.

Benefits include market reach, visibility, getting your foot in the door with experts you might otherwise not be able to partner with, driving traffic to your blog, website, landing page, or any number of locations you want potential clients and customers to end up—more of a dedicated following and ultimately increased revenues. The revenues are a result of introducing people to your products and services or your becoming an affiliate of your featured guests. There are plenty more benefits, but you get the idea. Podcasting is HOT!

Do you need a team to get going with a podcast? Nope. You’ll just have to work harder to do everything that needs to be done. For many people, you won’t have a team. I certainly didn’t early on in my business development days.

One of the most evident reasons my show has done so well this early on has to do with the experts I’ve interviewed. People like TFOI founders, Denise Wakeman and Ellen Britt; Internet super star, Jason Fladlien; real estate investment expert, Susan Lassiter Lyons; and Kindle whiz kid, Brian G. Johnson, to name just a few of my hot guests.

Not only have they helped to spread the word about the show, their communities have also jumped on the bandwagon to spread the word. In a nutshell, it all boils down to my circle of influence.

There was a time I dreamed of having this type of circle of influence. The network of influencers where I could just pick up the phone and say, “Hey Bud! I have this thing I want you to do,” and they would immediately say yes.

Today, it's part of “business as usual.”

There's something to be said for being able to do this regardless of the industry you are in. But this type of influence doesn’t happen overnight. It starts with the first relationship you build. Then the next. And the next. And the next.

It happens by taking a long-term approach to building your online presence. It happens by not burning bridges. It happens by sticking with what you are doing.

It happens by being willing to serve others before you want them to serve you.

When you take this approach, the results can be staggering.

If you really want to have great results with your efforts to give away and sell digital products, start now to build aligned relationships. Avoid simply trying to build relationships for how it will benefit you, but rather, how can you create a win/win/win.

Win for you. Win for the other person. And ultimately, win for your clients and customers.
